Volunteering
Most scholarship applications are asking for community involvement experience. NOW is a great time for becoming involved. These scholarships want to see a track record of community involvement, not three weeks worth before applying. There are many opportunities available in the community. Daycare centers and seniors citizen residences are deeply appreciative for extra help. Helping in church and synagogue activities is a rewarding way to achieve this volunteering also.
College Applications
Juniors need to be deciding on which colleges to apply to in the fall. Most public universities have early application deadlines anywhere from November 1st to December 15th. Summer is the perfect time to research colleges and to make college visits. It is usually advisable to make an appointment before visiting so you can ask questions. June and July are the best months. Virtual tours are available on lie but in person visits are the best.
College Recommendations
Decide which teachers you want to write recommendations and give them at least 2-3weeks notice. The same applies to your counselor. The first ACT is in September.
Sophomores: Practice makes Perfect
NOW is the perfect time to start practicing for the Prairie State Test. You can purchase an ACT Prep book and work in it. There are also practice tests on www.act.org.
