A Freshman Academy Welcome
Welcome to the start of the 2008-09 school year. My name is David Brothman and I am proud to part of the new administrative team here at North Chicago Community High School as Assistant Principal and Administrative Leader of the Freshmen Academy. It is exciting to see so many students enter high school eager to learn and face new challenges.
For the 2008-09 school year, we have put a program in place to ensure that our students receive all the necessary skills they need in both Language Arts and Math. To do this, we have added Math and Language Arts Concepts classes. These courses give students the opportunity to receive a double dose of both subjects each day. For students who need a little more help in reading, we are continuing with the Read 180 program. Those students will have three Language Arts courses each day. This year, freshmen will also be taking part in a new testing program that will help us guide them through high school and beyond. The M.A.P (Measure of Academic Progress) will be given in Reading and Math at least twice this year. These tests are 1 hour each and are computer based. The first test is scheduled for October 15th.
Our teachers will be teaching student centered lessons and relate teaching to student’s lives whenever the opportunity arises. Speaking of teachers, I’d like to welcome the newest members of our Freshmen Academy family; Ms. Lanaya Stackhouse and Mr. Ray Wright (Math), Ms. Kim Warfield and Ms. Ann Gaskin (Language Arts), and Mr. Greg Mason (Social Studies). The rest of the Freshmen Academy is comprised of Mr. David Raszkiewicz (Social Studies), Ms. Karen Gordon (Language Arts), Mr. Paul Kwan and Mr. John Relias (Math), Mr. David Ferguson and Ms. Susan McGuire (Biology), and Ms. Joan Meltz (Reading).
I look forward to growing along with each and every freshman. Keep watching this page for updates and please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments or concerns. I can be reached at dbrothman@nchi.lfc.edu or by phone: 847-578-7400 ext. 246.
