About the Conference

Each of the 12 member schools bring student athletes for a series of seminars and small-group consultation. The schools also brought their athletic directors, coaches, and students to the program to act as facilitators.

The keynote speaker is Michael Brandwein, a professional speaker, educator and Lincolnshire resident who has run the leadership conference since its inception.

Participants attend large sessions in the school's performing arts center, then broke into smaller groups three times during the workshop to discuss what they had learned.
The workshop was broken down into three areas: leadership of self, leadership of others and sportsmanship.

Brandwein said in order for someone to lead, they must first understand themselves, their strengths and their weaknesses.  In order to lead others, the second major point, Brandwein said students must be able to communicate with their peers.  "Leaders need to know what motivates, why they're there and what they hope to get out of it," Brandwein said. "Perhaps the most important point we want to make is that leaders listen.

Sportsmanship is another key point of the workshop.  In an era when professional athletes taunt their opponents, Martin said he hopes the athletes will recognize their competition as opponents, not enemies.
