The Department of Naval Science offers students classroom instruction, drill experience, field trips, and leadership training to reinforce self-discipline, and teamwork.  Students learn the history of and an appreciation for the military’s role in a democratic society.  Naval Science at NCCHS is offered through the NJROTC Program.

Course Descriptions

Prerequisite: Physically qualified to participate in physical education programs

Length: 1 Year

This course provides an introduction to Naval Science by means of classroom work including drill, physical fitness, marksmanship, and field trips and participating in school activities.  Students develop appropriate traits that reinforce individual self-discipline that teaches them how to operate as a team.  Academics include leadership training, naval history, seamanship, and health education.

In this course, the basic foundation of Naval Science one is expanded upon.  The course is intended to establish commendable citizenship standards, high leadership goals, and a sense of moral responsibility while developing an appreciation for authority in a democratic society.  The course will firmly establish a sound appreciation for the contributions of the U.S. Navy to the American nation.  Academics include the civil war, oceanography, nautical navigation, intelligence, first aid, world situations, and physical science.

The foundation established in Naval Science 1 and 2 is expanded upon including world conflict, Geopolitics, meteorology, astronomy, navigation principles, and physical science.

Length: 1 Year

In this course there is an extensive use of a seminar format to foster critical thinking in areas of laws and justice, leadership and national security.  Strategy and foreign policy, as well as naval development, are also covered.
