Academy of Hospitality and Tourism
(AOHT)

The Academy of Hospitality and Tourism, member of the National Academy Foundation, is a school within a school, designed to give students practical applications and on-the-job training in a wide array of fields available in the travel and tourism industry.  At the end of this three-year program, students will be able to enter directly into the job market of travel and tourism.  The program provides a paid internship to qualified students during the summer of their junior / senior year.  Participation is by application, recommendation of counselor, and approval of the Academy Director.  The program does require a three-year commitment on the part of the students.  The purpose of the program is to provide students with an opportunity to explore, experience, and become educated in the principals, ethics, practices, and responsibilities of the everyday work world in travel and tourism industries.

introduction to hospitality & tourism

Prerequisite: Acceptance & enrollment in the AOHT program

This one-semester course of study provides an introduction to the travel and tourism industry.  Students are given an overview of the various components of the industry, a history of the industry, an introduction to marketing, and to the various exciting careers available in travel and tourism.  Students also engage in a case study of their own particular city studying the latest trends which are impacting the way people travel for both leisure and business.

A one-semester course of study designed to orient students to the world of work and school.  This course addresses the needs of students through the teaching and exploration of effective work and study habits.  Students prepare portfolios while learning about school resources and career opportunities.  This course also prepares students for college while developing the interpersonal skills of the individual student.

A one-year course of study in travel and tourism related literature combined with an emphasis on oral and written communication skills.  Students are prepared for the work world through a series of lessons on resume preparation and job-interview techniques.  (In addition, students complete a major research project, which is done in conjunction with the Geography for Travel and Tourism course)

This one-semester course of study focuses on the development of broad geographical skills.  In addition to learning how to utilize the basic tools of the geographer, students learn how geography impacts and is impacted by historical and political issues.

A one-semester course of study aimed at teaching students the basics of how airlines, hotels, and car rental agencies use computer-based data to facilitate business and leisure travel.  Students will learn the theory and practice of microcomputer use for travel and tourism, as well as reservations done under a variety of circumstances.

A one-semester course geared to providing students with the opportunity to employ all of the information they have learned about the Hospitality & Tourism industry through an examination of various areas of the world that are major tourist destinations for Americans.  Students will also examine the airline, hotel, cruise line, car rental industry, and other segments within the hospitality tourism and travel industries.  At the end of the course, students are required to complete the TAP test (Travel Agency Proficiency) to demonstrate mastery of the material and for certification in the travel industry.
