About North Chicago Community High School
North Chicago Community High School is a comprehensive high school serving the North Chicago and the Great Lakes Naval communities. NCCHS offers honors and AP Courses in the core classes; and the school has a partnership with the College of Lake County for our students to enroll in several technical programs at the college. NCCHS offers extensive electives classes to supplement the regular academic programs. The school has a state- of-the-art broadcast studio where students are provided an intensive Communication Arts program. The school also has an Academy of Finance and Freshman academy to provide personalized instruction for many of our students. Beginning the second semester of 2007-08, NCCHS will offer the NovaNet program for credit recovery for our students. In addition, NCCHS has a Navy ROTC program that has received State and National recognitions.
NCCHS has a rich tradition of having outstanding athletic programs, and that tradition continues to flourish in basketball, football, track, soccer, volleyball, and wrestling, to name a few. As the school begins its partnership with High Schools That Work, NCCHS is prepared to meet the challenges of preparing our students for college, the workforce, and responsible citizenship as we "Soar Into The Future."
About the facilities and programs
North Chicago Community High School is a modern 22,000
sq. ft. facility housing a 750-seat auditorium, a fully automated
library, excellent choral and band facilities, a new chemistry
lab built in 1997 (a second science lab will be renovated next
year), a 450-seat cafeteria, and 3 gyms. Extensive, well-maintained
outdoor athletic facilities include a new 8-lane running track,
new tennis courts and a lighted stadium. NCCHS maintains an
average 16:1 student-teacher ratio.
The college preparatory program includes honors courses in all core subjects and advanced placement classes in U.S. History, American Government, Calculus and English Literature. At least one AP science course will be offered in Fall, 2001. General math has been eliminated, and all freshmen must take algebra or geometry. The school has a chapter of the National Honor Society.
Vocational education options include a strong business education curriculum, Radio/TV (taught at a new state-of-the-art Radio/TV studio as of January, 2001), courses in desktop publishing, and a 3-year Academy of Travel and Tourism. Starting this Fall, students can also enroll in "NetPrep," a 2-year program to prepare students for careers as network technicians, and a 3-year Academy of Finance.
Excellent technical/vocational programs are also available to NCCHS students at the Lake County Area Vocational Center/Technology Campus.
Extra-curricular activities include Naval Jr. ROTC, Individual Events, three choirs, concert and marching band, student theatre, fine arts, and newspaper/yearbook. NCCHS fields teams in football, wrestling, baseball, basketball, track, cross-country, tennis, volleyball, softball, bowling, cheerleading and pom pom. A golf program was introduced last year.
